Wheel Alignment FAQ's

What is a wheel alignment?

Wheel alignment consists of adjusting the angles of the wheels so that they are set to the car maker's specification. The purpose of these adjustments is to reduce tire wear, and to ensure that vehicle travel is straight and true (without "pulling" to one side).

What happens when my tires are not properly aligned?
  1. Uneven tire wear
  2. Vehicle pulls or drifts consistently to one side
  3. Steering wheel is off center

Why should I come to Dave's Car Care for a wheel alignment and not a tire shop?

Dave's Car Care not only uses the same manufacturer specifications as your tire shops, but we also:
  1. Use the latest wheel alignment equipment. The John Bean Visualiner 3-D provides an extremely accurate measurement, complete with visual representation identifying current and optimal settings.
  2. Reduce your wait time. By using the latest 3-D computer technology and visual equipment, you receive a more precise wheel alignment in less time.
  3. Provide a printout of exact adjustments made.
  4. Service large trucks as well as vehicles. Our new alignment machine's extra long rack services heavy duty trucks as well as vehicles.
  5. Provide total car care as well. Save time and stay a shop you already trust for wheel balancing and alignments.

How long does a wheel alignment take and should I make an appointment?

An alignment generally averages from 25-45 minutes.

An appointment is not required, but it helps us to get you on your way as quickly as possible.

Should I get a front-end or four wheel alignment?

A front-wheel alignment only aligns the front wheels. A four-wheel alignment aligns all four wheels. All vehicles can benefit from a four-wheel alignment, but it is especially important on front-wheel drive cars and minivans as well as rear-wheel drive cars that have independent rear suspensions.

Until a decade ago, two-wheel alignments were the norm for all cars and trucks. But the arrival of front-wheel drive changed all of that. It's always been important to align all four wheels to one another because the rear wheels can have just as much influence on steering as the ones up front do. But on most rear-wheel drive vehicles, there are no adjustments on the rear suspension. So even though the need to check rear wheel alignment is there, there's not much a technician can do if the rear wheels aren't true with respect to the ones up front.

What then is wheel balancing?

Wheel balancing consists of adjusting the weight of a car's wheel so that weight is distributed evenly throughout a wheel. Heavier (or uneven) areas within a wheel usually causes vibrations generally at speeds between 50 and 70 miles per hour. This is one reason why cars that need wheel balancing will notice vibrations in the steering wheel and or seat at highway speeds.
